The Fundación Cerezales Antonino y Cinia develops a program rooted in the territory, through a wide perspective. In this case, we come closer to the work of Jan Hendrix, since we recognize in it some of the thematic intersections which make contemporary art one of our main lines of work.
Jan Hendrix (Maasbree, Holand, 1949) was educated in the conceptual art at the Jan van Eyck Akademie in Maastricht. He travels around the world finding in nature infinite resources for his creativity, focused from the beginning on graphic arts.
The rejection and separation from the farming home environment, which is part of his start point, becomes a return journey to land, plants and seeds and to an acceptation of his origin as a farmer, after a phase of learning and searching. The subjectivity tries, through his way of represent the vegetable order, to classify and understand the nature. His work does not form an encyclopedic knowledge of the environment, but it reveals itself from the inclusion of many images of his constant trips. It could evoke the classifications made in the past by naturalists and botanists; however, his method leaks and refines nature reducing it to the essential.
His production processes are structured around the concept of archive; the comprehensive set of all the pictures he takes during his trips which form his initial approach to landscape and the plants within. Besides this archive exercise, there is a second one, made in the studio, in which pictures are reduced to their simplest form trough paintings that are scanned and stored until the moment to work on them comes.
From general to particular. From gross landscapes in the series “Badlands” to the greatest refinement and outline of the vegetable element. Jan Hendrix gives us the itinerary reproduced in this exhibition. Trees and plants, “After Nature” pods and seeds for an intermedia approach.
